You have thanked your experienced divorce attorney for his or her support and fundamental knowledge of the Illinois Marriage and Marriage Dissolution Act (750 ILCS 5), and now it is now time for you to move on.

After the customary grieving period, you now feel as if you could put on your dancing shoes, kick up a little dust, and get back out there. However, the decision to date after divorce is one of the most stressful situations a newly single person can endure.

Even though you may have convinced yourself that you are ready to rejoin the single life, the odds of finding a suitor in the grocery aisle may be slim to none. Is joining an online dating service in your future?

One of the biggest, and perhaps one of the most overwhelming, is dating. There has been a surge of popularity in online dating sites over the past several years. Many of these sites “guarantee” you will find love. But will you?

A recent 64 page report, written by scientists who were commissioned by the Psychological Science in the Public Interest, challenges the assertions of mathematical algorithms scientifically proven to predict successful relationships as used by online dating websites.

In fact, one author of the report compares online dating predictions to making predictions on the stock market—economists may know a great deal about the market and companies, but predicting which stocks will increase in value is still an unguaranteed risk, just like going out on a date. There is no way to predict if the date will lead to a successful relationship.

online dating IMAGEWith the Internet becoming a huge part of our everyday lives, it’s no wonder that the popularity of online dating has increased dramatically over the past few years, especially for those people who have just gone through a divorce and are trying to “get back out there.” While some people may jump at the idea of meeting someone via the Internet, others may feel a bit apprehensive about not going with the old-fashioned way. However, there are many ways you can make your online dating experience stress-free and, hopefully, successful.

When you get started with an online dating website, take the time to make sure your profile is as detailed and representative as it can be. Let people know who you are, while making sure to only give out information you’re comfortable with floating around on the Internet. The most important part of creating your profile is to be yourself. Choose a good photo as your profile picture. Avoid photos that have been excessively edited, and try to find one that’s well-lit, in-focus, and illustrates who you really are. It’s not a bad idea to use a photo of you doing something you love.

As you get into the more tedious parts of creating your profile, make sure to avoid clichés at all costs. Too many people have exactly the same phrases and claims on their profiles, such as: “I live life to the fullest,” “I like to take things slow.” Once again, be yourself. This is the best way to stand out amongst the hundreds of other online daters.
